Abstract

Asian Buddhism has today become a global religion, nurturing the basic sentiments of freedom, equality, and fraternity. Lord Buddha has been called the 'Eye of the World' and 'The Light of Asia' because of his great thoughts and teachings of humanity. In the 3rd century BCE, after the Kalinga war, Emperor Ashoka, inspired by the spirit of Dhamma Mangal, declared 'Dhamma Vijaya' instead of a war victory — a beginning of world history that became the foundation stone of the great mantra of world brotherhood and global peace, 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam'. This paper explores Lord Buddha's philosophy of non-violence, compassion, and peace; the role of Emperor Ashoka in spreading Dhamma globally; and the relevance of Buddhist teachings for India's Vision 2047 and global peace in the contemporary world, where the Russia-Ukraine war, Israel-Palestine-Iran conflict, and climate change crises call for the wisdom of the Dhamma path.
